UFC Undisputed 2010 Review

UFC Undisputed 2010 reviewed on PSP by Harry Neary. Game supplied for review by THQ

First things first, an apology, for the tardiness of this review. THQ was kind enough to send over review code for the game's release but thanks to the vagaries of the UK postal system it only arrived on our doorstep a few days ago. And so it's only now we can bring you this rather late review.

UFC Undisputed 2010 is of course a port of the PS3/X360 game you have probably already played being a fan of MMA and the like. You may be wondering if it's worth grabbing the portable version and wondering further how the control scheme - which used pretty much the whole pad - translates to the simpler PSP controls.

Well THQ has done a pretty good job of translating the bigger game down to PSP dimensions. Face buttons provide your basic kicks and punches and these can be modified via the shoulder buttons. The nubbin is used for your grapples and the like.

So far, so funky, but this control scheme can be tricky to get to grips with at first because you're moving with the dpad and then dropping your thumb down to the nubbin for the grapples, clinches etc. It takes a bit of practice but ultimately doesn't get in the way of the fun - unlike so many other PSP control schemes.

In technical terms UFC Undisputed 2010 is no great shakes, there's clipping upon fighter contact, a lack of polish in the presentation and the sound could be much better. But the game hangs together due to the control scheme actually working and there being a heck of a lot of content for you to enjoy.

The deepest game mode is career, where you create your won fighter and embark on a pro-career in the UFC. Between fights you'll learn new moves, improve your fighter's attributes then aim to make use of them in the next bout. Elsewhere Ultimate Fights gives you a chance to re-fight classic contents and change the course of history - with the game offering particular objectives. Obviously your mileage in this mode is really down to how much you actually know of UFC history, but it's a neatly constructed section of the game even if the names meant nothing to me.

For those of you like me who know nothing of MMA or UFC there's still plenty to enjoy in this well constructed game. Fans of the sport are going to get more out of it obviously, but if your a fan of the fighting game genre there's plenty for you to enjoy even without knowledge of the sport.

UFC Undisputed 2010 lacks some polish and can take a while to get to grips with, but ultimately the player is rewarded by a solid and mostly fun game that's worth a punt. Recommended.
